As most of you know, Seelye is run by a mother daughter team. With me, Hannah, working out of our Brooklyn studio and my soulmate of a mother, Kathy, working from Boulder.
Our long distance, mother daughter relationship is filled with hour-long phone calls every day. Much of it revolves around our beautiful jewelry company. Probably too much of it involves us getting each other fired up about the state of the world.
Some of my favorite moments are when we share everything we’re consuming. Our consumptions inspire and nourish us. They leave us creatively fulfilled and remind us of the stunning forms of art that live all around, even amidst the chaos.
We’ve been sharing these “consumptions” on social media for the past few months, but I keep feeling a quiet urge to connect more deeply. I think that feeling has grown with each workshop we host in our community.
We begin every workshop by going around the room to introduce ourselves and share our most sentimental piece of jewelry.
It blows my mind, because each time, it’s a new type of story. And yet, somehow, always the same. A reminder of our unique individuality, and our deeply shared human experience.
Time and time again, I’m left with a longing to keep our clients together just a little bit longer. To listen more. To share more.
The love and connection felt during these moments is so strong, I often find myself wanting to ask every person who walks through our doors, “Will you be my friend?”
I often work at my jewelry bench in complete silence, which I imagine some will find extremely strange. More often than not, I enter a “flow state,” a creative, meditative bliss I don’t quite have words for. In these moments, thoughts move through me.
Sometimes it’s the words my mother and I have shared. Other times, it’s the intimacy of custom projects and our beautiful clients, the weight of current events, the characters in the books I read, femininity, and everything in between.
This is where At The Bench has bloomed from. It will be a quiet dispatch from our jewelry studio—part artist’s journal, part meditation on the world outside. Written words born in the stillness of our design process, the thoughts that pass through us while our hands are busy.
It’s about art, legacy, grief, love, community, beauty, and everything in between.
I hope these entries meet you wherever you are, with curiosity, depth, and a bit of breath between the noise.
